Why page speed actually matters

This isn't a vanity metric. Speed changes whether people stay, whether they buy, and whether Google shows your site to anyone in the first place.

53%

of mobile visitors abandon a site that takes longer than 3 seconds to load (Google research)

Up to 7%

drop in conversions for every additional second of load time, per widely-cited industry studies

Ranking factor

Google has used page speed as a search ranking signal since the 2021 Page Experience update

First impression

A slow, glitchy load is often the first thing a visitor learns about how a business runs

Why is my website so slow?

A low score almost always comes down to the same handful of causes. Most of them are decisions made when the site was built, not anything you did wrong.

Test Your Site

01

Oversized images

Photos uploaded straight from a phone or camera are often ten times larger than the screen needs. They are the most common reason the main content loads late.

02

Slow, crowded hosting

Budget hosting puts hundreds of sites on one server. When the server is slow to answer, every other fix is working uphill.

03

Too many plugins and scripts

Every plugin, slider, and page-builder add-on loads its own code. Stack enough of them and the page freezes while the browser catches up.

04

Third-party widgets

Chat bubbles, review badges, booking embeds, and tracking tags all load from someone else’s server, on someone else’s schedule.

05

No caching or compression

Without page caching and compressed files, the server rebuilds every page from scratch for every single visitor.

06

Content that jumps around

Images without set sizes, late-loading fonts, and pop-in banners push the page around as it loads. That is what layout shift measures.

What is a good PageSpeed score?

Google sorts every score into three bands. Here is what each one means for a small business website, and the load-time targets behind them.

90–100

Good

Fast for real visitors on real phones. Keep it there with regular updates and lean pages.

50–89

Needs improvement

Visitors feel the delay, especially on mobile. Usually fixable with image, hosting, and script cleanup.

0–49

Poor

Slow enough to lose visitors before the page finishes loading. A rebuild can cost less than the repairs.

What is a good website load time?

More questions? Contact us

Is this website speed test really free?

Yes. No login, no email, and no limit on whose site you test. It runs Google’s own PageSpeed Insights engine live, the same data developers use, and explains the results in plain English.

What is a good PageSpeed score?

90 to 100 is good, 50 to 89 needs improvement, and under 50 is poor. Those are Google’s own bands. For a small business website, aim for 90 or higher on mobile, since that is how most customers find you.

What is a good website load time?

The number that matters most is Largest Contentful Paint, the time until the main content shows up. Under 2.5 seconds is good, and over 4 seconds is poor. Layout shift should stay under 0.1, and blocking time under 200 milliseconds.

Why is my mobile score lower than my desktop score?

The mobile website speed test simulates a mid-range phone on a slower cellular connection, so every heavy image and script costs more. Most sites score lower on mobile. Google ranks sites by their mobile version, so that is the score worth fixing first.

Why does my score change each time I run the test?

Each test is one live run from Google’s servers, and network conditions vary from run to run. Expect a few points of movement. Run it two or three times and look at the range, not a single number.

Why is my website so slow?

Usually it is oversized images, slow shared hosting, too many plugins or scripts, or third-party widgets. Most of these are fixable. Some sites are built in a way where a rebuild costs less than patching every problem.

Can Cindaro make my website faster?

Yes. Every Cindaro website is built for speed and managed for you, with hosting, updates, and security included in one monthly price. Our sites score 90+ on mobile. See plans and pricing.
