Transparency in Web Design
Know What You're Paying For Before You Sign
The web design market has no licensing board, no exam, and no title protection. Anyone can call themselves a web designer or an agency tomorrow morning, which makes it hard to tell a serious partner from a good sales pitch.
These resources break down the tactics that look impressive in a meeting, the questions that cut through them, and the things you can check yourself before any money changes hands.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hiring for Your Website
How can I tell if a web design agency is legitimate?
Check what you can verify yourself. Run their own website through a speed test on a phone. Read their reviews for specific detail rather than generic praise. Ask for the name of the person you would actually work with. Ask who owns the domain and hosting once the site launches. A serious partner answers all of these plainly. If the answers are vague, that is the answer.
What is virtual office map spam?
Some agencies rent unstaffed virtual addresses and list them as local branch offices on Google, then generate reviews in bulk to make each one look established. Virtual offices are a normal business tool. The problem is presenting an unstaffed address as a staffed local presence. Google’s guidelines call for a location that is staffed during its posted hours and makes in-person contact with customers there.
Do I own my website, domain, and hosting?
You should. The domain should be registered in your name, and you should have your own logins to the registrar, the hosting account, and the site’s admin. Ask before you sign what transfers to you if the relationship ends. If the answer is that they handle all of that, find out exactly what you would walk away with. What to look for in a website platform for growth covers portability in more detail.
Can agencies guarantee a #1 ranking on Google?
No one controls Google’s search results, so no one can honestly guarantee a specific ranking. Guarantees are usually built on ranking for phrases nobody searches, or on language vague enough that it can never be wrong. Honest SEO commitments describe the work and the process, not a guaranteed position.
What should I ask before hiring a web designer or agency?
Who exactly will I work with? Can I see your own site’s performance scores? Do your reviews describe real projects? Will I own the domain, hosting, and analytics? What happens to my site if I stop paying or decide to leave? The answers, and how readily they are given, tell you most of what you need to know.
